History:
Anti perspirants (in the form of underarm deodorant) were first invented in the 9th century, but were not commercially produced until the late 1800′s. The applicator for the roll-on deodorant actually used the same technology used by the ball point pen. With the invention of aerosols for anti-perspirants, they took off and were quite popular until the 1970′s when both the FDA and the EPA came down on the air-based deodorants. Causes:
Perspiration is a natural occurrence that allows the body to cool off when facing excessive heat. There are two main causes for perspiration:
- Physical Heat – Increase in core or skin temperature.

In some instances of over-sweating, it could be based on Hyperhidrosis and could be localized to certain areas of the body. While there is no known cure, there are reasonable steps you can take when you’re looking to combat perspiration.
Treatment:
While it is important that you allow your body to sweat as it is the natural way of cooling off, there are ways to limit the amount that your body perspires effectively. One of the easiest ways is to purchase anti-perspirants for personal use. You can find antiperspiration sticks for men and women readily available in most grocery or drug stores.
If you find that your body is continuing to over-sweat, you might want to consider drinking more water and/or changing your diet. While it might be counter-intuitive, studies have shown that increasing your water intake will keep your body hydrated and at the right temperature and is an effective anti perspiration method. Additionally, making sure you’re eating healthy food and limiting your soda intake can decrease the level of perspiration considerably. Finally, if you’re still having problems with over-perspiration you might want to consider surgery. There are effective sympathectomy and sympathotomy procedures available that can assist with anti perspiration.
Risks:
With anti perspiration surgery, it’s generally advised that you do not have it performed if you have or have had severe heart or respiratory problems. One of the issues is that many patients find that they’ve simply traded one area of excess sweating for another. In 5-10% of patients, they’ve actually found an increase in sweating while eating, called gustatory sweating.
